Our Goals In Community

From the hub of the Permian Basin, a network of care for transgender and nongender conforming individuals is greater than 250 miles away. Therefore, it is often left to transgender individuals to locate the providers needed to assist in their (or a family member’s) transition, leading transgender folk to experience a disproportionate sense of isolation and burdensomeness. Further, without a network of resources, even professionals who wish to serve the transgender community are unprepared and incapable of connecting the necessary pieces. As the only group serving vital needs of transgender folk in our area, OIWT is positioned to provide necessary education and advocacy services to our community. OIWT emphasizes the interdisciplinary nature of transgender care and the importance of understanding one’s place and role within a network of providers, with the ultimate goal of decreasing transgender folks' sense of isolation by increasing access to vital services.

Our Programs

Drawing off the success of the 2017 symposium, we have continued to provide education and outreach for local agencies and individuals regarding transgender affirming practices and care. We have conducted “Lunch and Learn” trainings at local rape crisis and children’s advocacy centers, CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) of West Texas, the Unitarian Universalist Church of Midland. We are also seeking to work with local Student Health Advisory Councils to provide transgender-affirming policy recommendations for local school boards. Additionally, we are planning a second annual symposium that will take place on November 2-3, 2018.
